The deal: A Honda Civic hatchback 1.8 i-VTEC SR for £20,929.50

The dealer: Hendy Honda, Southampton

The saving: £2230.50, or 9.63%, off the manufacturer's list price of £23,160

What's the car like?

New car deal of the day: Honda Civic

If you're looking for a family hatchback with plenty of space and excellent reliability, then the Honda Civic should definitely be on your shortlist.

The Civic competes in the same crowded market as other popular hatches such as the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. There's plenty of choice in the Civic range, with the car available both as a hatch or estate and in standard, sporty S or, in the case of the hatchback, performance-orientated Type R forms.

The 1.8-litre engine you get as part of the deal we've found here is our pick of the petrol range. You get better performance than from the smaller 1.4 but without too much penalty in fuel economy or CO2 emissions. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but this is the only engine choice available with an optional automatic.

Plush SR specification gets you plenty of goodies inside, including leather trim, heated front seats, satellite navigation and a panoramic sunroof.

Should I choose any options?

No, because SR specification already gets you everything you're likely to need. We'd usually recommend going straight for mid-range SE Plus trim, which is one less than SR. It still gets you everything you're likely to need but for a lower price.

What are its rivals?

Competition in this market is as tough as it gets. The Focus and Astra are two of the best-sellling cars in the UK, but while both are arguably more rounded packages next to the Civic, it's the Honda that comes out on top if a big boot and outstanding reliability are top of your agenda.

With the Honda you also get the so-called Magic Seats. They allow the bench parts of the 60/40 split rear seats to fold vertically up, creating even more storage space in the rear cabin.

The Ford Focus currently holds a three-star rating with our road test team, while the Astra and most of the other offerings in this market - including the VW Golf and Seat Leon - all get four stars. Our favourite car in this market, the Skoda Octavia, gets five stars.
