29 June 2018 – Why can't I have a second USB port?

Is there a greater disaster in the life of a ten-year-old than whatever device they are staring at running out of power? Seemingly not, given the frequent bouts of disgruntlement emanating from the middle and back rows of seats of my Skoda Kodiaq.

It has always struck me as odd that you can’t spec extra USB ports rear of the Kodiaq’s front seats (where there is just one, located in the centre console), given the car’s supposedly family-friendly credentials. It’s odder still when you discover that European buyers do get the option. A vagary of right-hand drive, I guess.

Instead, there is a 12V socket in the middle row, which is useful, of course, and it’s quite possible to plug a converter to house USBs into the slot (they cost as little as Β£3.99 on the internet). But it’s a fairly inelegant solution in a car that is otherwise so brilliantly focused on ensuring mundane everyday challenges don’t become an issue.
