Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Want to inject some Italian flair into your bland large SUV? Enter the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It's a premium saloon which rivals the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan, and offers entertaining handling and competitive running costs. Space for those in the rear seats could be better, though.

The smallest of BMWs coupé-styled SUVs offers tidy handling and a classy interior, plus a strong range of engines, but it is less practical than conventional rivals.

Land Rover Discovery

Lexus RX L

Mitsubishi Shogun Sport

The old Nissan Qashqai was one of the best-selling family SUVs, and this latest version looks set to continue that trend. It's a good all-rounder, being practical by class standards, with a great driving position and a smart interior. Some rivals are more fun to drive, though.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross
