Plus, your view of the road is generally better, because you can see over the top of regular family saloons and hatchbacks. In this feature, we've chosen our favourite versions of each model, so you know you're getting our top pick.

Hyundai Kona Electric 64kWh

The Kona Electric covered a massive 259 miles between charges on our Real Range test. That huge range is key to its appeal, then, but it also impresses with surprisingly rapid acceleration and a great driving position which means you won't feel uncomfortable after a long journey. A choppy ride and a small boot stop it from being among the best in its class, but the Kona Electric should be on any potential EV-owner's shortlist.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

The Eclipse name is well known to motoring fans, but many were surprised to see it appear on an SUV because it's traditionally been reserved for coupés.
