If you regularly engage in really rough off-roading, then please take our two-star rating with a grain of salt, because off-roading is what the Ineos Grenadier does best. It’s one of the most capable 4x4s you can buy, especially if you opt for the torquey diesel engine. On the other hand, if the roughest stuff you have to tackle is a muddy car park – or even a mild green lane – then we reckon there’s little to no point in putting up with the Grenadier’s agricultural, unrefined demeanour. The Land Rover Defender is a better choice in most use cases.

If you plan to use your Ineos Grenadier on the road more than you do off road, we think this is probably the engine to go for. That’s because it gives you plenty of power off the line, sprinting from 0-62mph in 8.6sec, but proving more refined than the diesel. It’s not as fast as the equivalent engine in a Land Rover Defender, but it’ll never leave you wanting when overtaking or joining the motorway.
