Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? Well, we're about to find out, because the new Suzuki Across large SUV is based on another car – in this case, the Toyota RAV4.

The Across gets different styling, of course, to set it apart from its Toyota equivalent, and gets the same engine setup as the upcoming RAV4 plug-in hybrid. That means a 2.5-litre petrol engine is mixed with an electric motor to produce a combined 180bhp. The Across has one of the longest electric-only driving ranges of any plug-in hybrid, being able to cover up to 46 miles before its petrol engine needs to join in. We can expect the same of the RAV4 plug-in hybrid when that car arrives later this year.

CO2 emissions in the Across are rated at just 22g/km on the WLTP test cycle. Drivers can switch between different modes designed to either conserve or deploy battery power, and the Across gets four-wheel drive as standard.

Inside, the Across features a 9.0in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone mirroring, but much of the car's dashboard design and ergonomics are the same as in the RAV4. That means there should be a reasonable amount of space for passengers both front and rear.

Boot space falls behind that of the current hybrid RAV4, probably because of the Across's bulky battery, with 490 litres available. That also means the Across can carry less than large SUV rivals such as the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V, but it should still have enough space for your family's holiday luggage.

Although Suzuki has yet to reveal what trim levels will be offered on the Across, we do know that key safety kit will include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, blindspot monitors and a rear cross-traffic alert system. There's also an eCall system that can automatically alert the emergency services in the event of an accident. Standard kit includes LED headlights and 19in alloy wheels.

2021 Suzuki Across price

Prices for the Across have yet to be announced, but it's likely to cost less than the existing RAV4, so a starting price of around £30,000 seems likely. That would make the Across cheaper to buy than the CR-V Hybrid but more expensive than the CX-5, which currently doesn't have any electrified options.

You can expect to see more Suzuki-branded versions of Toyota products in the future, starting with Suzuki's version of the Toyota Corolla hatchback. That car should do well, because the Corolla is our favourite hybrid car.
