We recently drove the Toyota’s new soft-top Aygo, the X-wave, and have already found some discounts on the Fiat 500C and Citroen C1 rival.

For

It might not be a true convertible – the canvas roof is basically a large sunroof that can open from the windscreen to the tailgate – but the X-wave version of the Aygo is still a suitably summery effort that’s great for town driving, and there's no buffeting from the roof at low speeds.

The interior comes with a decent amount of kit, and there's a good amount of room available considering this is a car that's 100mm shorter than the Volkswagen Up.

The Aygo also comes with Toyota’s five-year warranty, for extra piece of mind.

Against

The 69bhp engine may be well powered for town driving, but it needs to be worked hard to get up hills or reach motorway speeds. Once at 70mph, though, it will cruise along nicely.

Should I add any options?

X-pression trim comes with LED daytime running lights, foglights, 15in alloys, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth and DAB radio as well as a 7.0in touchscreen. Optional extras include upgraded alloys for Β£499.
