Deal of the day: Skoda Octavia Scout

The new Skoda Octavia Scout is one of the most economical 4x4s you can buy, according to the What Car? real-world fuel economy testers.

In fact, the results showed that the new car is second only to the Fiat Panda 4x4, because it recorded a True MPG rating of 50.1mpg

Another way to save money with the Octavia Scout is to pay less for it in the first place, and you can do just that with our Deal of the Day, which comes with a saving of almost £3500 on the rugged estate.

The Octavia Scout is a fine option for those who live down a track rather than at the end of a cul-de-sac.

It gets all the benefits of the standard Octavia Estate; the practical 610-litre boot is bigger than more conventional SUVs such as the Mazda CX-5 and traditonal estates such as the Ford Mondeo.

There is just the one trim level, which comes with a decent amount of equipment: dual-zone climate control, touch-screen sat-nav, rear parking sensors, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and a lane-departure warning system, while black plastic exterior cladding and different bumpers help the Scout to stand out from lesser models.

It's still fairly pricey to buy, despite this superb deal.

The increase in equipment and the 4x4 technology adds a fair bit  of weight, which affects performance. It doesn't drive drastically differently to the standard Octavia, but it is slightly slower.

It also doesn't get quite as much kit as the likes of the Skoda Yeti, which gets hill hold and hill descent controls, so is not such a capable off-roader as the small SUV.

Should I add any options?

The variable-height boot floor is one thing we would consider, as it gives you a totally flat load bay that doesn't otherwise come as standard.
