Mini five-door hatch revealed

The five-door version of the Mini hatchback has been revealed. It is 16cm longer and 1cm taller than the three-door equivalent, and offers more space for luggage and back-seat passengers.

In the boot, the space has increased by 67 litres, taking the overall capacity up to 278 litres. The rear seats can be folded on a 60/40 split to boost the luggage space to a maximum of 941 litres. A storage package is also available as an option, and brings an adjustable boot floor, a luggage net, and seats that can be angled to increase space. Passengers in the back are treated to 7cm more legroom than is currently available in the three-door model.

The arrival of the five-door Mini coincides with the introduction of the Cooper SD engine - a168bhp 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit. It emits 112g/km of CO2, claims an average economy of 68.9mpg and gets from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds. The Cooper SD engine is also expected to be offered on the three-door version, although this has not yet been confirmed.

The five-door is also offered with the standard Cooper D engine plus the Cooper and Cooper S engines. 

Eleven colour options will be offered for the five-door car and it will come with the same equipment levels as the three-door version. Prices start at £15,900 for the Cooper, the Cooper D is priced from £17,050, the Cooper S at £19,255 and Cooper SD £20,050. The new car will be built at Mini's Oxford plant and will go on sale in the autumn.
