Plug-in hybrid

If you're not ready to commit to an EV but are able to charge your car at home or work, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) could be the perfect compromise. The best can travel for over 80 miles on a charge, and once the battery is depleted, automatically switch to their petrol or diesel engine.

There are a huge choice of models out there, from family cars to estates and SUVs, but all provide quiet zero-emissions motoring with the reassurance that a five minute fill-up will rarely be far away. As well as the potential for exceptional fuel economy, company car rates are low, too.

Cupra Formentor

from £27,800
The Formentor is a sharp-looking SUV that's good to drive and available with a wide range of petrol engines

Ford Tourneo Custom

Mercedes GLA

from £35,285
Family SUV is classy, comfortable and well equipped, but some rivals are cheaper and more practical

from £89,400
An accomplished and rapid all-weather grand tourer, but the Audi RS5 is too aloof to be truly fun.

Honda CR-V

from £41,800
The Honda CR-V has masses of space, but other SUVs offer more equipment and superior refinement for less money.

Vauxhall Astra

from £27,495
The Vauxhall Astra is a well-rounded, good-value family hatch that offers plenty of room at an affordable price

Peugeot 5008

from £30,999
The 5008 is stylish, practical and good to drive. It's one of the best seven-seat SUVs you can buy

Volvo V60

from £43,955
Tidy handling, beautifully built, with a comfortable ride. And did we mention it’s blooming roomy? The Volvo V60 is a great estate car

Mercedes SL

from £107,030
The Mercedes SL’s rivals may be sharper to drive, but none are quite as adaptable to any situation.

Lexus NX

from £46,695
The Lexus NX is worth considering as a company car. Diesel rivals are more satisfying to drive, though, and more practical.

Toyota RAV4

from £41,333
A decent SUV, but there are other rivals that are better to drive and offer more for your money.

Hyundai Tucson

from £26,495
The Hyundai Tucson offers good value for money, strong performance and striking looks, but its ride and steering aren't the best

Volkswagen Golf GTE

from £22,990

Plug-in hybrid family SUV aims to offer the best electric car driving characteristics but with the range of a petrol car

BYD Seal 6

Citroën C5 Aircross

from £25,491
The C5 Aircross family SUV is quiet, comfortable and great value for money

Bentley Flying Spur

Cupra Leon

from £25,000
The Cupra Leon combines sporty looks with sharp handling and is also available as a practical estate car

Decent to drive, generously equipped and the hybrid version makes a lot of sense as a company car. It's just a shame the Toyota C-HR isn’t cheaper to buy and bigger in the back.

Leapmotor B10 Hybrid

from £28,500
The Leapmotor B10 Hybrid has plenty of room and tech, but it's disappointing to drive
