Around 90% of Aygos are bought on PCP finance agreements, and investigation into the monthly payments for the equivalent Hyundai i10 and Skoda Citigo reveals these rivals are cheaper based on the same deposit over the same three-year period, as well as to buy outright.
The Aygo’s running costs are more impressive. Its modest CO2 emissions mean there's no road tax to pay each year,
and it managed a respectable 49.1mpg in our True MPG tests.
Those choosing to run one through work will benefit, too. Its slightly higher P11D price means it will cost slightly more than its closest rivals, but when broken down into monthly payments, the difference is too small to matter.
Toyota Aygo equipment

Our favourite X-play version adds 15in steel wheels, a leather multifunction steering wheel and gearlever, two extra speakers (four in total), Bluetooth, air-con and a rev counter. Spending a little extra on Toyota's touchscreen infotainment system is worth it.
X-pression models get 15in alloy wheels, front foglights, part-leather sports seats, and the touchscreen infotainment system with reversing camera and DAB radio.
There are also two special editions – X-cite and X-clusiv – with bright paint finishes and the option of full leather upholstery.
Toyota Aygo reliability
The Aygo is too new to have figured in either our latest reliability survey or the latest JD Power customer satisfaction survey. However, Toyota traditionally performs very strongly in both. In the latest JD Power survey, it charted above average overall and in our survey, around mid-table for reliability.
All Toyota's come with a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty, with no mileage limitation for the first year. There's also a 12-year anti-corrosion and perforation warranty, and a three-year paintwork and surface rust warranty. Extended warranties are available.
Hyundai’s warranty on the i10 is significantly more generous, however: five years with no mileage limit.
Toyota Aygo safety & security
This generation of the Aygo is yet to be crash tested by Euro NCAP, but Toyota has fitted the Aygo with six airbags, hill-start control, tyre pressure monitoring, ESP and, on manual models, a speed limiter as standard. Every Aygo also has isofix anchoring points, while X-clusiv models come with automatic headlights.
All Aygos get remote central locking, a steering column lock and an immobiliser. Even so, security firm Thatcham Research has rated the Aygo poorly in its resistance to being broken into, awarding it two out of its maximum five stars. In tests to determine its resistance to being driven away it did better, scoring four stars.

This is based on X-pression, but focuses on style. It adds 15in gloss black alloy wheels, black details and orange paint. Unless you’re keen on the look, we’d save the money and go for one of the lower trims.
The range topper adds automatic headlights, climate control and chrome detailing outside. Unless these features are paramount, we’d look further down the range.
Adds leather to the interior, lots of kit and a roll-back sunroof, but it’s not worth the extra cash. If you’re desperate for the sunroof, go for the x-pression x-wave model.
