The MG ZS has a relatively upmarket interior, roomy rear seats, tidy handling and a long warranty. Extremely competitive pricing explains away a lot of its flaws, including its unsettled ride, but the absence of automatic emergency braking is harder to forgive. We reckon the cheapest 1.5 VTi-tech engine in Excite trim makes the most sense.

If you want some extra luxuries, you’ll want to go for this top-spec Trophy trim level. On top of the standard equipment that you get with SE trim, you also get wireless phone-charging, a 360-degree parking camera, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic sunroof, leatherette seats, heated front seats and power-folding mirrors.

If you need to cover longer distances regularly, this 68.3kWh battery version (usable) will be the one for you, covering 273 miles officially before you need to plug it in. Like the smaller battery version, performance is adequate rather than amazing, with the Long Range actually covering 0-62mph 0.2sec slower. Even so, it’ll still be enough for almost every situation.
