The original X5 was BMW's first SUV when it arrived in 2000, and it went down as a smash hit.

However, nearly two decades on, this five- or seven-seat luxury SUV faces a much wider palette of rivals, among them the excellent Audi Q7 and new Mercedes-Benz GLE.

So, for the X5's fourth generation, BMW has ramped it up in all areas.

The new model is of a striking, angular design featuring a prominent grille, while it's larger in every direction in order to give more room for passengers.

Inside, it has gained a 12.3in digital instrument display alongside its dial-controlled 12.3in infotainment screen, plus redesigned seats that are electrically adjustable and heated as standard.

Full details of the new X5 can be read here

Three engines will be available at launch: a 335bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol, and two 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesels with 261bhp and 395bhp. All come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

The new X5 will arrive in showrooms at the end of this year and be priced from £57,495.
