SUVs with small petrol engines are usually better suited to urban driving than longer, faster jaunts. The XC40 is no exception to this rule, and we'd certainly recommend one of the more powerful engines if you regularly plough up and down motorways or live in a hilly area. As it stands, we'd point you towards the D4 diesel, although the cheaper D3 or T4 petrol could potentially be even better. We'll be getting our hands on those versions of the XC40 later in the summer.
The T3 does make sense if you're a low-mileage, mostly town driver, though. Performance is acceptable if not outstanding, and the same is true of its standard manual gearbox, while the asking price undercuts that of our current favourite (the D4) by more than £5000. Most drivers won't complain about, or even notice, the absence of four-wheel drive.
But if you do choose the T3, we'd recommend steering well clear of the optional adaptive suspension. We've yet to try the regular Dynamic suspension fitted to Momentum and Inscription models, so for the time being the R-Design with its standard 'sports chassis' is definitely the one to go for.
