2020 MG ZS EV verdict

Think electric SUVs are all hideously expensive? The new MG ZS EV is quite the opposite. But is it any good?...

2019 MG ZS side

It would be easy to point to the ZS EVs shortcomings when compared to the vanguard of electric cars. No, it doesnt have a particularly lengthy range compared with the e-Niro and no, it cant charge as quickly as a Tesla.

But that would be overlooking a massive mitigator: price. Right now, the ZS EV costs from as little as £21,495 – thanks partly to the £3500 grant from the Government you get when buying any EV, but also to a further £3500 saving that MG is offering on the first 1000 retail orders. You even get a free home charger. For context, if you were to join the long waiting list for an e-Niro, brilliant though it is, youd be relieved of £32,995 after grants. Even the cheapest Kona Electric costs £27,250.

The range-topping Exclusive version of the ZS EV adds a couple of thousand to the bill but brings heated door mirrors, synthetic leather, heated front seats with electric adjustment for the driver, an opening panoramic sunroof, a more powerful stereo and a rear-view camera. You also get blindspot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, the latter of which warns you about approaching cars when youre backing out onto a busy road.

And while thats still over than £5000 more than youll pay for a petrol ZS in the same trim, its worth noting that electric versions come with automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning as standard – two things that arent available at all on the petrols and which should hopefully help improve the cars disappointing Euro NCAP safety score from 2017.

Our hunch is that this will be the most sought-after MG in decades, and given the relatively limited production, a waiting list is almost a certainty. So, our advice? If you want one, get your deposit down quick.
