It’s not hard to find elements of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid experience that are profoundly impressive. For a car with genuine off-roading ability and an imperious driving position to steer so sweetly and work so effortlessly in almost any environment – yet to match an Audi RS6 Avant for straight-line pace – is evidence of exceptional engineering.
However, there are some awkward facts that undermine the case for this car. The stiffened suspension needed to contain the weight of that battery and the car's fearsome potency compromises ride comfort compared with the regular Cayenne Turbo, particularly at low speeds. And, unless you can regularly charge the battery and use the 19-mile range for a generous proportion of your travel, the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid is nothing like as economical as the headline numbers suggest. It’s also worth pointing out that, while 110g/km of CO2 is impressive for such a rapid SUV, the BMW X5 45e emits as little as 27g/km and has an electric range of up to 54 miles according to official figures, leading to much lower company car tax bills.
Some will still be drawn to the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid purely by dint of its top-dog status. However, most drivers, depending on their preference for performance or frugality, would be better served by either the regular Cayenne Turbo or the X5 45e, both of which are considerably less expensive.
