Our verdict

The ZS is by no means a bad car and it’s MG’S best attempt yet to compete with more mainstream competition since its Chinese acquisition. In fact, it betters the Duster for interior quality, passenger space and infotainment and is more agile through corners.

Overall, though, the Duster is a better choice. The fact that it’s cheaper to buy (for private cash buyers) and run is the main reason, but its punchier performance, more comfortable ride and bigger boot are also key draws. If you’re on a tight budget and you really want an SUV, the Duster remains our top recommendation.
