11 June 2018 – getting the simple stuff right
My Volvo XC40 has lots of clever tech, including adaptive cruise control with steering assistance to allow semi-autonomous motorway driving, and an Oncoming Lane Mitigation system which can stop me inadvertently crossing a road's centre line into the path of oncoming traffic. However, it’s some of the car’s simplest features that make the biggest difference in day-to-day use.
Part of the boot floor, for example, can be folded up into a vertical position to divide up the area and stop smaller items sliding around; very useful if, like me, you tend to buy a basket’s-worth of shopping every couple of days instead of a trolley’s-worth once a week. What’s more, the numerous in-car cubbies let me stash everything from drinks to my daughter’s toys.
If I had to guess, I’d say that Volvo employs more interior designers with young children than some of its rivals, although there is still one thing that I think they’ve got wrong: the XC40’s two USB sockets are in an open tray in front of the gear lever rather than in the central storage bin between the front seats, meaning I have to unplug my iPod and phone to hide them away every time I park up.
