Summer has just got a little warmer for me, because I've just taken delivery of my new Seat Leon. The version I'll be living with is the Cupra 280, complete with a 276bhp petrol engine, which makes it the most powerful car that Seat has ever made.

There are a few numbers that are making me quite excited about the next few months, most notably the 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds.

However, I am reassured by the official fuel economy of 42.8mpg, and I imagine that is the one that I'll be aiming to test on a more regular basis given this car is going to be my regular commuting tool as well as my weekend entertainment.

I've got several long trips planned in the Cupra for the coming weeks, but my colleagues have already beaten me to it. The Cupra arrived while I was on holiday, so one fellow What Car? staffer nabbed the keys for a long trip to Wales, which accounted for the bulk of the car's initial 1000 miles.

He promised me that he stuck by Seat's guidelines for the early stagesof the car's life and didn't rev the engine any higher than 4000rpm. It meant that it was fully 'run in' by the time I got into the driver's seat for the first time, which was handy. It means I can start enjoying more of the Leon's abilities right from the start.
