For Better quality than on previous Kias and there’s lots of space. It’s easy to drive too, and comes with a seven-year warranty.

Against It doesn’t match class leaders behind the wheel, and the cabin isn't as classy as Europe’s best, either. Road noise is excessive.

This is the spec to go for because it’s practical, lavishly equipped and has plenty of pulling power. Negotiate a discount, though - aim for £1500 off list price.

The Cee’d made Kia a serious contender in this competitive sector at a stroke. Buy one and you’re unlikely to be disappointed - it has plenty of appeal as sensible, practical and well-priced family transport, and it has a hugely reassuring seven-year warranty.

Whether in five-door hatch or SW estate form, the Cee’d doesn’t have any major flaws, although it doesn’t beat the competition in any one area. It’s good to drive, with light, direct steering, but it’s not as entertaining as a Focus; it’s well made, too, but still some way behind a Golf.

A range of engines - all good - is available, although the 114bhp 1.6 diesel is the pick of the bunch. That said, company buyers may be interested in the Ecodynamics model, which has a stop/start system to cut emissions.

Safety kit is comprehensive, which will reassure family buyers, and few will find the cabin offensive - it’s well put together, if a little bland.
