BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe revealed
* BMW unveils final version of 4 Series range * Gran Coupe offers four doors and bigger boot space * On sale June 21 2014...
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe has made its official public debut at the Geneva motor show.
The Gran Coupe is the third and final variant in the 4 Series range, and comes with four doors and a bigger boot than the 4 Series coupe.
The Gran Coupe is the same length, width and height as the coupe, but the roof is 112mm longer, increasing the rear headroom and boosting the boot volume. At 480 litres, the boot is 35 litres larger than the coupe's, and is the same size as that in the 3 Series.
Despite the increased headroom, it is designed for two adults in the rear with the bench seat designed to look like two individual seats. However, BMW says that the upholstered centre console will be capable of accommodating a third passenger.
The rear seats fold 60/40, and the boot capacity increases to 1300 litres when they are folded flat. A stainless steel boot lip protector also boosts practicality.
The boot is electronically powered as standard, but buyers can also opt for a system that allows the boot to be opened by waving a foot under the bumper. A sensor detects the movement when the car key is nearby.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe comes is SE, Sport, Modern, Luxury and M Sport trims – the same as the rest of the 4 Series range. All come with front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, a Sport leather steering wheel, xenon headlights, two-zone air-conditioning and cruise control. They also get Bluetooth, DAB and a 6.5-inch colour screen.
It comes with five engines to start with, three petrols and two diesels. The 418d and 420d will be the most economical, with the 418d averaging 61.4mpg and emitting 121g/km of CO2 when paired with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 420i, 428i and 435i make up the petrol offering to start off with, and the 435i is the quickest, taking 5.5 seconds to get from 0-62mph.
From July, a 254bhp 430d and a 309bhp 435d will join the range. BMW's all-wheel drive xDrive system is to be offered on the more powerful diesel engines, and the 420i.
