The Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion will cost from 20,335 when it arrives later this summer.
It is available in both three- and five-door formats, with the five-door version costing 20,990.
The Bluemotion is the most efficient Golf yet, with an average fuel economy of 88.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 85g/km. The improved efficiency comes from a series of tweaks over the standard Golf.
The ride height has been lowered by 15mm and the gear ratios have been made longer, while the aerodynamics are further improved by a roof spoiler, a masked front grille, an optimised cooling system and a spoiler on the rear pillar. The Bluemotion also comes with 15-inch alloy wheels with low-rolling-resistance tyres with higher air pressure ratings.
There are tweaks to the engine as well, which is 4bhp more powerful than the standard 1.6-litre diesel, at 108bhp.
Bluemotion standard equipment is similar to the Golf S's, which means a DAB digital radio, air-conditioning and front electric windows.
The Golf Bluemotion is available to order now, with first deliveries due in August this year.
