2015 Volvo XC90 hybrid will beat 100mpg

Volvo has announced the range of engines that will appear in the 2015 XC90 SUV, including a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid that will beat 100mpg.
The range-topping 394bhp hybrid – badged T8 ‘Twin Engine’ – uses a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine to power the front wheels, while a 79bhp electric motor propels the rears. Six engine modes allow the driver to choose how to power the car. These range from pure electric to full hybrid power, plus special off-road settings.
Using only the electric motor, the seven-seat XC90 T8 will travel around 25 miles on a single charge. Official combined CO2 emissions will be around 60g/km, which means fuel economy of around 109mpg.
Other engines offered in the XC90 will include two four-cylinder diesels, badged D4 and D5. The latter produces 222bhp and 347lb ft of torque, with estimated economy of around 47mpg. Entry-level cars get the 187bhp D4 with 295lb ft of torque, which should manage up to 56mpg.
There are no pictures of the exterior of the new XC90 yet, but you can expect a bluff nose that’s dominated by a wide, slatted grille, plus T-shaped daytime running lights and C-shaped tail-lights.
We already know that the XC90’s cabin is set to be one of the most luxurious in the class, with leather, metal and wood finishes, plus a new high-tech touch-screen.
The new SUV will also be the first Volvo fitted with self-driving technology, including an 'Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Steering' system. This can steer the car autonomously and keep it moving in pace with other vehicles in low-speed traffic jams.
Details about the XC90’s safety kit will be revealed towards the end of July. Finally, we will see the first shots of the exterior of the new Volvo XC90 at the end of August. The new car goes on sale in 2015.
