2020 Porsche Taycan 4S review: price, specs and release date
The Porsche Taycan 4S undercuts the Turbo version of this fully electric four-seater by more than £30,000, but don’t think that means it’s worse...

The arrival of the Porsche Taycan 4S sounds like a fairytale for electric car buyers looking for driving thrills. Not only is it the cheapest version of Porsche’s Tesla Model S-rivalling electric grand tourer, but spec it right and it can also travel farther between charges than its more expensive Turbo and Turbo S siblings, with an official range of up to 287 miles.
That range only comes if you go for the ‘Performance Battery Plus’ option – costing an extra £4613 – but it also brings you more power (483bhp compared with 429bhp on the standard car) and a higher rate of charging (270kW versus 225kW), meaning a 5-80% top-up takes just 23 minutes. That last figure alone will be enough, we suspect, to tempt many buyers. If you don’t tick the Performance Battery Plus box, your official range falls to 252 miles – well behind the Model S but still enough for most people.
Other changes for the 4S compared with the existing Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models include smaller 19in wheels and brakes plus a subtly different bodykit.
What's the 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S like to drive?
Even though this is the baby in the Taycan range, the 4S has no trouble feeling fast. Put your foot down and, even on the ice and snow-strewn roads of Finland, it gathers speed with the rapidity we’ve come to expect of high-end Model Ss. It also feels surefooted, with drive being shifted from the rear to the front wheels when conditions demand it. Combine that with steering that’s accurate and well weighted and this Taycan feels as involving as you’d want an electric grand tourer to be, even on slippery roads.
As with the pricier Turbo and Turbo S variants, drivers can choose between different driving modes prioritising either range or performance, as well as suspension settings meant for road or track use. In either Normal or Sport modes, the Taycan rides well and does a good job of isolating you from harsher bumps in the road. Although our car rode on optional 20in wheels with winter tyres, we suspect the 19in alloys that come as standard on the Taycan 4S will be the ones to go for.
In terms of real-world range, more than 200 miles is achievable even in cold conditions – and when you can charge in less than half an hour, long journeys seem that bit more achievable.
While all of this is impressive, it’s the Taycan’s ability to make any driver feel like they’re far more talented than might actually be the case that’s most intoxicating. And all the while there’s a plethora of safety systems designed to stop driving fun from turning into an expensive phone call.
What's the 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S like inside?
You’d struggle to mark out the Taycan 4S from its more expensive siblings from the driver’s seat. There are the same digital dials, which can show a wealth of information – apart from, annoyingly, the sat-nav map – and the same 10.9in infotainment touchscreen. Below that is a separate touchscreen for the climate controls, although the whole setup would be easier to operate with traditional dials. You can also pay extra to give your front passenger their own touchscreen, allowing them to see things like your route – and speed – from their own seat. As well as looking great, everything in the Taycan feels built to last. It not only surpasses the Audi E-tron but is also miles better than what you’ll find in a Tesla.
Space for the front two occupants is decent, but where the Taycan especially impresses is in its rear seats, where two six-footers can sit comfortably behind people of similar height. The boot, which is eclipsed by that of the Model S but which offers more space than your average family hatchback, can easily swallow a couple of carry-on suitcases with room to spare.
