Audi Q4 SUV confirmed for 2019

Audi will launch a direct rival to the Range Rover Evoque and Mercedes-Benz GLA with its Q4 SUV-Coupé in two years time.

The Audi Q4, which will sit between the current Q3 and Q5 SUVs, has been conceived as a more stylish alternative aimed at young families. It will use much of the same underpinnings as the next-generation Audi Q3 which will grow in size to provide a bigger distinction between itself and the smaller Q2.

The Q4 has already been shown in heavily disguised form, with 2014's TT Offroad concept.

Inside, drivers can expect many of the same features offered in the latest Q5 – namely a digital instrument cluster, large navigation screen and inductive smartphone charging.

Hybrid power and a range-topping RS Q4

Engine options will include a new generation of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all with a common 1.5-litre capacity. Buyers will also be able to choose from updated versions of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol and diesel options already offered in Audi's SUV ranges. A plug-in hybrid model is also planned, and will likely be badged as the Q4 e-tron. It will be able to travel for up to 31 miles on electric power alone.

Buyers looking for a performance-oriented Q4 won't have to wait too long, either, as a planned RS Q4 model is expected to come with a 400bhp 2.5-litre petrol engine.

While it's too early for Audi to issue official pricing for the Q4, it's expected to command a price tag of around £28,000, making it cheaper than the Evoque which starts from £30,600, and the £36,380 Mercedes GLC.

Competition on the horizon

Before the Q2 goes on sale, BMW will bring its own challenger to market in the form of the X2, a sporty SUV-coupé based largely on the latest X1.

Audi has big plans to expand its current SUV range, and before the Q4 goes on sale there'll be two larger models in the form of the all-electric Q6 e-tron and the range-topping Q8.
