Audi Q7

Our pick 50 TDI quattro S line
For Stunning interior, a smooth engine and a wonderfully pillowy ride on air suspension.
Against Rivals have better infotainment systems, while auto gearbox is slow-witted.
What Car? rating 5/5

They say nobody's perfect, but sometimes it’s easy to think otherwise. Remember that kid at school who seemed to be annoyingly brilliant at anything he turned his hand to? Well, the Audi Q7 is the SUV equivalent, sitting on or very near the top of the luxury SUV pile in almost every quantifiable area.

Take the interior. The sumptuous materials and scrupulous assembly mean that no rival can match the Q7 for quality, while the generous space and clever seating mean it’s also among the class leaders for practicality.

On the road, meanwhile, it delivers a ride that’s as smooth and as quiet as you’ll find in any limousine, making it effortlessly cosseting, yet it still manages to feel remarkably compact and agile in a set of bends.

The swot of the luxury SUV class doesn’t quite have an unblemished school report, though. The automatic gearbox tends to hesitate when pulling away from junctions, while the recent switch from an intuitive dial-controlled infotainment system to a fiddlier touchscreen arrangement is a backward step. As touchscreens go, however, it’s still a decent example of the genre and delivers an impressively wide range of functionality.
