Skoda Superb Estate range adds 4x4

Skoda says that a four-wheel-drive version of its Skoda Superb Estate family car will join the range when the car goes on sale in February.

The system is available with the 158bhp 1.8-litre TSI and 256bhp 3.6-litre V6 petrol engines, along with the 168bhp 2.0-litre TDI CR diesel engine.

It shifts torque to the wheels that have most traction using the ABS sensors as a guide to give the car maximum grip in slippery conditions.

When all-wheel drive isn't required the system is disengaged, which means fuel consumption isn't as high as it would be with a permanent four-wheel drive system.

Four-wheel drive will also make towing trailers and caravans easier and safer.

Prices start at 22,420 for the 1.8-litre 4x4 model in SE trim. The Skoda Superb Estate goes on sale on February 26.
