Van and Commercial Vehicle Awards 2023: Best Commercial Pick-up Truck
Proving that working pick-up trucks can be practical as well as comfy, the Toyota Hilux shines in its ability to traverse any terrain while still carrying a full load...

When the going gets tough, Billy Ocean once sang, the tough get going. And if the going gets really tough, they call in a Toyota Hilux to finish the job, because it’s near-unstoppable when the road runs out.
Even when you’re not travelling as the crow flies, the Hilux impresses with punchy performance from our preferred 2.8-litre diesel engine, and a six-speed manual gearbox that’s satisfying to use.
This combination offers lots of low-down shove, which will be useful if you’re taking full advantage of the Hilux’s 1085kg payload capacity; that’s slightly less than the rival Ford Ranger can manage, but not by a huge margin, and let’s remember you’re paying so much less for the Hilux in the first place.
The Hilux’s interior feels built to last, with robust-feeling buttons and fixtures that feel well screwed together, and the materials used should be easy to keep clean – even when the outside of your pick-up is anything but.
Even Active models come with essential features such as air conditioning and adaptive cruise control, while Icon models and above get an 8.0in infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, as well as a reversing camera to help avoid any car park scrapes.
Admittedly, the rival Ford Ranger is the more comfortable vehicle if you value life’s luxuries, while the Isuzu D-Max offers even more variety in its range than the Toyota. But neither rival is as capable as a working vehicle as the Hilux.
What’s more, at the end of a day’s work, it’s as adept at moving you and your family over hill and dale as it is hauling cargo. It’s also attractively priced, and its rock-solid residuals mean you’ll get more of your money back when it comes time to sell. And if you needed an extra cherry on top, there’s also Toyota’s stellar reliability to consider. For the long and winding road, then, there can be no better companion.
