The Cayman is a joy to drive and, if you go for the GTS version, has a fantastic, sweet-sounding six-cylinder engine to match its superb dynamics. If your budget doesn't stretch to the GTS, don't worry: the Cayman 2.0-litre is a fine alternative that still handles superbly (it just doesn't sound very good).

Entry-level Caymans come with air-con, xenon headlights, Alcantara seat trim, heated seats, automatic lights, a 150-watt stereo and a 7.0in infotainment screen with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, a DAB radio and Bluetooth. Climate control, heated seats, parking sensors and cruise control are all on the options list and are worth adding.

The entry-level Cayman 2.0 is a fine option. With 296bhp it's really not slow because, on a cold, damp day, we timed one fitted with the seven-speed PDK automatic gearbox going from 0-60mph in 4.6sec. And that was without the optional Sport Chrono pack that, Porsche claims, makes it even quicker. It's not just its outright speed but the way its power builds; it gets really gutsy from around 2500-3000rpm and then romps away evermore willingly to the 7500rpm redline. It's smoother than the 2.5-litre Cayman S and sounds aggressive and racy, just not as intoxicating as the six-cylinder GTS.
