Hybrid

Hybrid cars are precisely that - where power comes from a combination of combustion engine and a pairing of batteries and a motor. There are many different forms of hybrid cars, each bringing their own benefits.

Traditional hybrids – sometimes called full hybrids, or rather erroneously, self-charging hybrids – use a small battery and electric motor to support the engine when driving. This saves fuel because the engine doesn't need to work as hard, and they can even run on electricity alone for short periods of time.

They’re distinct from plug-in hybrids because they don’t need to be plugged in, and the ability to cruise under zero-emissions power places them apart from mild-hybrids.

Lexus LC

from £80,015
The Lexus LC is a flawed yet desirable GT car with a surprisingly soulful edge. The V8 version is a lot of fun

Mercedes AMG C63

from £40,695
A BMW M3 or M4 may be technically quicker and sharper to drive, but the Mercedes-AMG C63 offers more fun on the road

Volkswagen Touareg R

from £58,201
The plug-in hybrid Touareg R is Volkswagen's most powerful model but there are better fast SUVs available

Citroën C5 Aircross

from £25,491
The C5 Aircross family SUV is quiet, comfortable and great value for money

DS 7

from £38,400
The DS 7 Crossback is a well-equipped, comfortable and practical large SUV, but its pricing and interior quality are questionable

Peugeot 508 SW

from £48,125
The Peugeot 508 SW is pricier and less practical than mainstream rivals

New Citroën C4

from £18,990
The C4 has been facelifted for 2025 but remains focused on comfort and affordability

Bentley Flying Spur

from £190,370
The Bentley Flying Spur is a strong performer with a lovely interior. However, it’s expensive and doesn’t ride as smoothly as it should.

Mercedes GLE Coupé

from £78,130
It’s got a gutsy diesel engine and a comfortable ride, but the Mercedes GLE Coupé’s price and practicality let it down.

Renault Rafale

from £33,995
The Rafale has a plush and spacious interior but some rival family SUVs ride and handle better

Peugeot 3008

from £28,645
Stylish, practical and good to drive, the Peugeot 3008 is one of the best small SUVs you can buy.

Nissan X-Trail

from £32,500
The Nissan X-Trail offers space for up to seven and is powered by a rather unique hybrid system

BYD Seal 6

from £26,000

Family SUV is economical with tidy handling, but not as spacious as some rivals

New Renault Austral

from £34,450
The Austral delivers impressive efficiency but rival family SUVs are more comfortable

Mazda CX-60

from £33,998
The CX-60 is plush inside and practical but rival family SUVs have a more comfortable ride

Mazda 2 Hybrid

from £22,995
The 2 Hybrid offers a comfy ride and excellent efficiency but consider the Toyota Yaris too

Kia Stonic

from £20,695
The Stonic handles tidily and is well equipped, but it could be cheaper and more practical

Toyota C-HR

from £30,695
Decent to drive, generously equipped and the hybrid version makes a lot of sense as a company car. It's just a shame the Toyota C-HR isn’t cheaper to buy and bigger in the back.

Audi A7

from £47,351
A beautifully made, comfortable high-speed cruiser and a decent – if not involving – car to drive, but infotainment system is too complex

Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer

from £23,425
The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is comfortable, spacious and affordable, if not quite as practical as the Skoda Octavia Estate.

Volkswagen Touareg

from £55,295
Big comfortable and capable, but the VW Touareg’s interior quality is a disappointment

Fiat 500 Hybrid

from £12,675
The new 500 Hybrid is a stylish city car that rivals the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto

Suzuki Across

from £37,490
Family SUV is competent, but only makes real sense as a company car

Peugeot 508

from £22,635
The high-tech Peugeot 508 is a terrific effort – it’s stylish, refined and good to drive. Only its limited rear space lets it down

Mazda CX-80

from £37,635
The CX-80 is smart inside and available with up to seven seats but there are more practical rivals

Suzuki S-Cross

from £22,849
