How we define sports cars

Performance and handling are the absolute priorities if you’re buying a sports car. You’ll want something that has the sort of pace and agility that you can exploit on a deserted country road or possibly even the odd track day. Factors like practicality and fuel economy are far less important.

It’s no surprise, then, that Porsche features strongly on our list of recommendations – the German brand has never had a better line-up of vehicles. Its entry-level Cayman offers astounding value for money, with great performance, sensational handling, a beautifully finished cabin. Shame its engine doesn’t sound better.

The Cayman’s bigger brother, the Porsche 911, is every bit the complete sports car, with jaw-dropping performance, a limpet-like ability to cling to the road, an even plusher cabin, and two small seats so the kids can come along as well. If money really is no object we’d point you in the direction of the fabulous McLaren 540C.
