Deal of the Day: BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer went head-to-head with the Volkswagen Golf SV in a What Car? group test. With both cars in diesel guise, the 2 Series Active Tourer came out on top, thanks to its superior practicality and refinement.

While the diesel engine in the 2 Series Active Tourer is well suited to company car drivers, a private buyer may be better suited to the petrol engine that we first drove back in October 2014, and we’ve found £1067 off its list price.

This petrol version of BMW’s first front-wheel-drive car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and a nicely refined turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that emits just 115g/km of CO2. This is only fractionally more than the equivalent diesel model, and the 1.5-litre’s claimed fuel economy of 57.6mpg helps keep running costs down.

The ride is excellent on motorways and faster country roads, and it deals well with road imperfections.

The boot is a practical, square shape that offers easy access, and there’s plenty of room in the front and back for passengers to stretch out in. The rear seats can slide forward to increase boot space.

The BMW does well to shut out wind and engine noise on the motorway, but road noise is intrusive, especially on rougher roads.

Should I add any options?

Entry-level SE trim is the best value and comes with dual-zone climate control, 16-inch alloys, rear parking sensors, USB, Bluetooth, DAB radio and automatic lights and wipers.

It comes with plenty of standard safety kit, too. Stability control, tyre pressure-monitoring system and six airbags all come as standard, as does a autonomous emergency braking system.

Notable added extras include adaptive cruise control for £240, a reversing camera for £290 and black roof rails for £170. Depending on your budget, and your practical needs, it may be worth adding some of these options.
