New Porsche 718 Cayman vs used BMW M4: which is best?
The latest Porsche 718 Cayman is a devilishly fast mid-engined sports car, but can it fight off a challenge from a used BMW M4 Competition for similar money?...

New Porsche 718 Cayman vs used BMW M4 – alternatives
The lack of aural delight from the current 718 Cayman has meant that rivals have been able to breach the class-honours barrier the old Cayman had enjoyed for many years. This is seen particularly in the case of the Alpine A110 that took the overall win in the sports car category at the What Car? Car of the Year awards. It’s a riot to drive, doesn’t beat you up every time you encounter a pothole and you can enjoy its performance more of the time.

If you don’t mind the blingy styling of the Mercedes C63 AMG, then you’ll love that fantastically flexible and wonderfully thunderous 4.0-litre V8 that it has. Based on the normal C-Class Coupé, the C63 is an altogether faster proposition. If you find an ‘S’ version, power is even higher than in the M4 Competition at 503bhp.
New Porsche 718 Cayman vs used BMW M4 – which is best?
If you regularly go on track days and value handling above all else, then you’d probably pick the Porsche. Few other cars can match it on a challenging stretch of road, and it is the more restrained car of the two to look at.

But, it’s hard to ignore just how much faster the BMW M4 Competition is compared with the Porsche. That extra performance goes a long way to quell your disappointment with the engine tone because it's so devastatingly quick in a straight line. It can still be made to hustle in the bends; just not quite in the same way as you can in the Cayman. However, in everyday life you will probably appreciate the more conventional layout of the BMW, which means you get a big boot, two extra seats in the back and an awful lot more equipment for the same money.
It’s not often possible to do more with less, but the M4 proves that, in this case, it can be done.
