2017 VW Polo Beats verdict and specs

Should I buy one?

The Beats slots into the Polo range above the Match trim, adding £950 to the price. However, for that you get the much more powerful stereo and full smartphone integration.

Whether it’s worth the extra really comes down to how much you value these items – and whether you like (or can forgive) the trendy-dad looks. But it’s worth noting that the standard Polo stereo is far from poor, and if you just want Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, these can be added to the Match by specifying the £125 Car-Net App-Connect option.

Buyers after a small hatchback that combines sporty looks with sensible running costs should also consider the Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost ST-Line and Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI Monte Carlo.

The Fiesta will cost you £110 more than the Polo, has a horribly dated infotainment system and comes with less kit, but it counters with a stronger engine and sweeter handling. Meanwhile, the Fabia also has less kit than the Polo, but it's cheaper, slightly more practical and classier inside.
