2018 BMW X2 20i M Sport - verdict

With no four-wheel drive or adaptive suspension, the BMW X2 20i has a lot to prove. Can it keep up with its diesel counterpart?...

The 20i petrol is a nice addition, especially as it brings front-wheel drive and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox to the X2. Compared with the 20d diesel, its running costs aren’t considerably worse, either - about 10mpg thirstier and 8g/km of CO2 more polluting.

For that reason, plus the fact it’s around £2500 cheaper, the 20i is a good choice, delivering more than enough power for both town and motorway miles and handling that should put a smile on even the most heavily botoxed fashion victim. Just remember that a stiff ride is the price you’ll pay for that cornering ability.

That said, the restriction of space and practicality leaves the X2 as more of a pumped-up hatchback than a practical family SUV. The Volvo XC40 is still the king of the class, while if you want a BMW, the more practical X1 is a better bet.
