7 reasons to buy a Seat Ateca

Seat’s Ateca is more than just good for a first effort in the SUV market – it’s a cracking machine that immediately takes the fight to rivals, such as the VW Tiguan, Nissan’s Qashqai and the Kia Sportage.

In fact, in its first outing against the big-selling Qashqai - which is a former What Car? Car of the Year and still our favourite small SUV for 2016 - the Ateca won.

It’s great value for money, an engaging car to drive and offers plenty of safety kit and practicality. Plus, with the range starting from just £17,990, it's also among the cheaper SUVs of this size to buy.

So does the Ateca deserve a spot on your driveway? Here are seven reasons to consider it.

7. Safety

It’s hard to fault the Ateca when it comes to safety and security. It scored a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating and all models come with front, side and curtain airbags, as well as an extra airbag for the driver’s knees. A tyre pressure monitoring system and front collision warning technology are standard as well.

6. Driving position

The Ateca hits the balance between hatchback and SUV right on the nose, with a wide range of adjustments available for the driver’s seat. The chair has plenty of lateral support and the steering wheel adjusts for both reach and rake.

5. Interior space

There’s a wealth of space for both occupants and items in the Ateca due to its height and large door apertures, and there's also plenty of storage compartments and pockets. Two adults will easily fit in the back, and the boot is bigger than the Qashqai's and the Sportage's.

4. Hushed interior

The Ateca offers a quieter, more sophisticated experience than plenty of its competitors. The 2.0-litre diesel is notable for its hushed tones from inside the car, and the smaller petrol engines are even quieter. Very little noise, vibration or harshness is transmitted through to the driver or passengers, and all the controls feel slick and precise.

3. Ride comfort

The Ateca hits a great balance for ride and soaks up road imperfections really well. The four-wheel drive version, with its more sophisticated rear suspension, rides slightly better, but the two-wheel drive models are still very good.

2. The price

The Ateca is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Tiguan, but you can get a well-specced four-wheel drive version for the same price as a mid-range two-wheel drive VW. Prices start at £17,990 and rise to £29,990. Running costs are also very reasonable, and it should hold more value after three years than a Qashqai or a Sportage.

1. Fantastic handling

It’s better than good - it’s class leading. Through the corners the Ateca is streets ahead of a Qashqai and compares well against regular hatchbacks due to firm suspension and precise steering that offers plenty of feedback. If you need a small SUV but enjoy your driving, then this is the car to go for.

What about buying used?

The Ateca is so new to the market that used models are as rare as hen’s teeth – we suggest you hunt around for a good deal on a new model, of which there are plenty.
