Our verdict

It’s a clear-cut victory for the new Audi A5 Sportback. As a motorway cruiser, it is more comfortable and quieter than the 4 Series Gran Coupé, yet it’s more agile on a twisting country road. Factor in its spacious interior and lower running costs and it becomes a no-brainer.

That’s not to say the 4 Series Gran Coupé is a bad car. It’s just showing its age these days, doesn’t feel as special enough inside and isn’t cheap enough to make up for its shortfalls
