New Skoda Superb vs used Audi A4 – interior & equipment

New Skoda Superb vs used Audi A4: which is best?

Both of these cars have generous equipment, with dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and cruise control coming as standard. The Superb has the biggest standard infotainment screen, at 8.0in, but the Audi comes with sat-nav, which you’ll need to pay extra for on the Skoda. However, the touchscreen system in the Superb requires you tap away at the screen, and it’s just not as easy to use while you're driving as the rotary dial controller and shortcut buttons in the Audi.

Being an Audi, the A4 could have been ordered with a whole host of optional extras that the savvy shoppers among you should look out for, such as the Technology Pack, which adds a larger 8.3in screen, and, if you’re really lucky, Audi’s brilliant Virtual Cockpit. This replaces the traditional instrument dials with a 12.3in digital screen that can be configured to display all manner of useful information right in front of you.

Build quality is good in both cars, but it's the Audi that will make you feel like you’ve climbed into something really posh. The material choices and fit and finish are all top-notch, plus every switch and button is beautifully well damped. The interior of the Skoda looks fine in isolation, but it feels significantly more downmarket when compared with the A4's.

New Skoda Superb vs used Audi A4 – space & practicality

This is where the Superb mounts a comeback, because not only does it have the rear leg room to shame a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but it's also a hatchback. This means it has a much larger opening to put items into the boot than the rather small letterbox slot of the A4. That’s not to say that the A4’s boot is unusable: it’s a good, square shape and plenty deep enough for most people's needs, plus the rear seats split-fold 40/20/40.

The Superb has standard lumbar support on the driver’s seat to improve driver comfort on long journeys, whereas this was an option on the A4. Despite this omission, the A4 still makes for a great motorway companion, especially in Sport specification, because the sports seats fitted provide more lateral support. You sit slightly higher up in the Superb, which may annoy those who like to sit nice and low, but there’s lots of head and shoulder room and adjustment in both the seat and steering wheel. The same is true of the A4, and you can still sit a six-foot passenger behind a six-foot-tall driver, so you shouldn’t feel shortchanged on space.
