For Nissan has given the Qashqai funky 4x4 styling, it's competitively priced and it gives a capable drive.
Against It's not the most entertaining car of its type, and neither resale values nor the diesels' fuel economy are as good as some competitors'.
The Qashqai's a breath of fresh air. Its funky image, roomy and practical cabin and solid build make it ideal for families. It's fine to drive and running costs are affordable.
Compared with some rivals, the Qashqai gives buyers a rather limited choice – just one body style, four engines and three trims. Visia is the cheapest, but comes with plenty of kit: Bluetooth connection, four electric windows, air-con, remote locking, and alloy wheels. Acenta models have cruise and climate control, parking sensors and automatic headlights and wipers. Top-spec Tekna models have heated leather seats and xenon headlamps.
Safety provision is good – the Qashqai scored the highest ever adult protection score in Euro NCAP tests and comes with six airbags as standard. It's a shame that stability control is only available as an option on the lower-powered Visia models.
The sensible engine choices are the 113bhp 1.6-litre petrol or 105 1.5 diesel engines. Both offer reasonable performance and economy. The 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units offer more pace and can be specified with four-wheel drive. Keep an eye out for 0% finance offers on the Qashqai.
