Car of the Year Awards 2022: Coupé of the Year
A good coupé isn’t just about style. The trick if it’s to be among the class leaders is that it must feel on point whether you’re enjoying a great road or enduring a terrible commute...
BMW 4 Series Coupé 420i M Sport (Pro Package)
When you take a hugely popular executive car, whip off two of the doors and charge more for it, you have to do something pretty special to make it a hit – and with the 4 Series Coupé, BMW has done just that.
The 4 Series Coupé has the bulletproof underpinnings of the 3 Series, but with a sexier silhouette, a stiffer structure, retuned suspension and a wider rear. In other words, what you lose in practicality, you gain (big time) in aesthetic appeal and driving pleasure.
We’ll let you judge the looks for yourself, but what we can tell you is that this is no sheep in wolf’s clothing. Twisty roads are the 4 Series’ natural habitat, and it devours corners with greater enthusiasm than the rival Audi A5 Coupé and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé. That’s true with the standard suspension and even more so with the M Sport adaptive suspension that you get with the optional M Sport Pro Package that we recommend.
The 4 Series Coupé’s rival-trouncing stability in bends and the relatively low, almost sports car-like driving position make it easy to forget there are back seats and a usable boot behind you. They’re not as spacious as the 3 Series’ – but then few coupé fans lie awake at night pondering storage volumes.
What will make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside is the classy interior. It borrows shamelessly from the 3 Series, and that means you get a comfortable and user-friendly driving environment, the brilliant iDrive infotainment set-up and impressive build quality.
If you tire of soaking up the interior ambience and actually want to drive somewhere, the 420i’s entry-level 2.0-litre petrol engine is our favourite way to do it. It’s punchy and makes a satisfying sound when you want to press on, yet it’s smooth and quiet in day-to-day driving. It also beats the equivalent C-Class Coupé for efficiency. As a bonus, it has variable steering that gets quicker as you apply more lock, making low-speed manoeuvring and parking easier.
Of course, ‘easy to park’ won’t be top of most coupé buyers’ priority list. It does, however, demonstrate what a versatile car this is. And it’s that versatility that makes the 4 Series Coupé the star of this particular show for the second year in a row.
