The S-Cross certainly seems like good value for money in our preferred 1.4-litre engine choice. It’s gutsy and efficient, can be had with a generous list of standard kit, plus it has a good-sized boot compared with the 1.5 hybrid. It’s a shame, though, that the infotainment system is so slow and the interior quality is uninspiring.

The top trim adds Allgrip four-wheel drive, part-leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, built-in sat-nav and a 360-degree parking camera.

Mild hybrid is strong enough for normal driving around town and on the motorway, but all the power is lower down the rev range so there’s no reward for holding on to gears and thrashing it.
