Motability - Access

If you want or need to sit higher up from the ground, an SUV such as the Volkswagen Tiguan is almost always a better bet than an estate car like this Passat.

Compared with other load-haulers, though, the Passat Estate puts the driver reasonably high up. The minimum seat height of 534mm is 24mm higher than the lowest seating position in the BMW 3 Series Touring. Meanwhile, the maximum seat height of 614mm is 42mm higher than the highest seat position in the 3 Series Touring.

The top of the Passat’s boot sill is 625mm above the boot floor. That’s the same height as the 3 Series' and a little lower than the Mazda 6 Tourer's (636mm).

Motability - Ease of use and options

Whether you prefer petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid power, every engine in the Passat line-up can be ordered with an automatic gearbox.

In general, the Passat is straightforward to drive, with light controls and reasonable all-round visibility.

The range starts with SE Nav, but you might want to consider stepping up to R-Line. As well as bringing a more aggressive look and three-zone climate control, it includes an 'easy open' tailgate that can be operated by moving your foot under the back bumper.

GTE and GTE Advance trims are reserved for the plug-in hybrid model. With these, you get a tyre repair kit as standard, although a space-saver spare wheel is an option.
