Ignore its slightly misleading saloon-shaped silhouette; the Skoda Octavia is a large hatchback that competes with cars such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus on price, despite being closer in size to a VW Passat or Ford Mondeo.
The big Skoda isn’t without its flaws. Some other cars in the class have plusher-feeling interiors, are quieter cruisers and have longer warranties. However, given its price and vast, practical interior, it is the best family hatchback you can buy at the budget end of the scale.
In fact, if space is a particular priority, the Octavia could well be the best family hatch full stop, even when compared with more expensive rivals such as the VW Golf and Audi A3 which are far more conventional in design.
