Best and worst coupes 2018

BMW owners have been longing for something like the 2 Series for some time now. Based on the smaller 1 Series, the two-door, four-seat 2 Series is competitively priced and squares up well to rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA. Like most BMW models, it handles well and the 220d engine we recommend is both powerful and economical.

Our pick 220d SE

Few coupés can match the all-round abilities of BMW's 4 Series. This is a car that looks great, is perfectly practical and has room for four inside. It may feature many of the same interior fixtures and fittings as the smaller 3 Series, but that's hardly a bad thing, and you also get the option of BMW's excellent iDrive infotainment and navigation set-up.

Our pick 420d SE

The three-door Leon SC is based on the regular Seat Leon hatchback, which means it's stylish, practical and comes with a very pleasant interior. Avoid the noisy 1.6-litre diesel engines and head straight for the higher-powered 1.4-litre petrol – only available with range-topping FR trim – and you'll have a brisk hatchback that also returns impressive fuel economy.

Our pick 1.4 EcoTSI 150 FR
