Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best luxury SUV for comfort
Most luxury SUVs deal in big, brash design. However, the best back this up with a wow factor interior that offers supreme comfort and quality. Plus, they're as fast as they are quiet...
Audi Q7 50 TDI S Line
‘Best car in the world’ is quite a tag, but the Audi Q7 has put in a strong claim to the title for a while. Rapid acceleration, spacious seating for seven, a class-leading interior… it isn’t short on strengths.
But the one area in which it’s ahead of even its most impressive rivals is ride comfort. Air suspension is standard, making the Q7 one of the most relaxing and cosseting cars to waft around in. It soaks up impacts from speed bumps and other road imperfections with aplomb and demolishes long journeys like a private jet. A BMW X5 is firmer, while a Volvo XC90 is much more easily unsettled.
The Q7 has a fundamentally sound, comfortable driving position, too, complete with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display; we’re yet to find a better setup. All of this is backed up by typical Audi build quality of the highest order.
But comfort also means quiet. And that’s where the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine impresses; it’s not only smooth, punchy and efficient but also hushed at a cruise.
