Car of the Year Awards 2022: Best family car for value
There are several types of family car, but here we’re looking at traditional hatchbacks: large enough to be practical, yet compact enough to be easy and enjoyable to drive...
Skoda Scala 1.0 TSI 110 SE

Is it big? Is it small? Well, the Skoda Scala is both, really. If you need maximum interior space for the money but want to do without the bulkier exterior of a Skoda Octavia, the Scala is the cake that you can have and eat.
It’s not only cheap compared with a Hyundai i30, Kia Ceed or Volkswagen Golf, but it can also spaciously accommodate four occupants and their kit in a conventional hatchback shape. A third rear seat passenger won’t have much to complain about, either.

The Scala isn’t just a cheap hatchback to buy; the 1.0-litre engine is cheap to fuel and there’s plenty of standard kit on our favourite SE model, with alloy wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, LED headlights and an armrest between the front seats. Factor in a comfortable ride and tidy handling and this family car that’s big on value certainly doesn’t feel like one that has skimped on substance.
