New Volvo XC90 vs used Land Rover Discovery: which is best?
The latest Volvo XC90 is proving popular – but a used Land Rover Discovery could be even more luxurious for the same price. Which should you choose?...
New Volvo XC90 vs used Land Rover Discovery – alternatives
At the Volvo XC90’s price, there’s actually very little out there that can compare to it and offer the same blend of talents. The BMW X5 is about as close as you’ll get, but even then, you’ll need to pay extra for seven seats. The Audi Q7, meanwhile, gets those seats as standard, but it’ll set you back a little more to buy.
The Q7 enters the equation as a used rival to the Land Rover Discovery, too. If you’re prepared to buy used, you’ll get a better specification for less cash than you will with the Discovery, and the Q7 is cheaper to run, too. The same sort of money could also buy you the Discovery’s bigger brother, the Range Rover Sport – although you’ll have to settle for a car that’s slightly older and probably about to run out of warranty.
New Volvo XC90 vs used Land Rover Discovery – which is best?
Which car you choose out of these two will depend enormously on your intended use for it. For day-to-day driving on urban or rural roads, the Volvo XC90 is more enjoyable to drive, cheaper to run, and more spacious in the back seats. As a brand-new car, it also has the added advantage of an extra year’s warranty – a useful bonus if its reliability record is to be believed.
However, the Discovery is smoother and quieter on long-distance motorway runs, and the extra space in the third row will no doubt come in handy if you carry seven people regularly. The extra heft of the Discovery will also prove useful for towing a caravan or off-road driving. You’ll have to live with higher running costs and a year’s less warranty – but you’ll also see more cash back come resale time. What’s more, the Discovery gets lots of extra toys thrown in, so it feels that bit more luxurious.
