There’s no doubt that the 318d is easily fast enough for most people. After all, it's quicker than the original 320d of the late 1990s. However, it isn't much cheaper than the modern-day 320d (about £1000) nor any more efficient with the exceedingly popular automatic gearbox fitted. You probably know where this is going.

All in all, the 320d remains the sweet spot in the 3 Series range, providing you with the best blend of performance and running costs; its eager acceleration is a perfect match for the sporty character of the 3 Series. You won’t be disappointed by the 318d and it can save you a few quid, but if you opt for the 320d instead, you’ll get the most talented model in the 3 Series range at a still-sensible price.
