Car of the Year Awards 2022: Best small electric car for value
This class embraces nimble city cars and handy small cars and continues onwards to encompass everything up to and including family-sized SUVs no more than 4.5 metres long...
Volkswagen e-Up 32kWh
The Volkswagen e-Up may be one of the oldest kids in the small electric car playground, but it still has a lot going for it.
For starters, it’s fun to drive; with instant response from its electric motor, it feels more sprightly than most petrol-powered models in the Up line-up, and quicker than its 11.9sec 0-62mph time suggests. Yet it’s also by far the easiest Up to drive, thanks to there being no gearchanges to worry about.
Its interior is well built and roomier than you might expect: its boxy shape provides enough head room for a pair of six-footers in the back. The seats are comfortable, too, and everyone gets a good view out, thanks to its large windows.
Although the e-Up’s official range is modest, at 160 miles, that’s still farther than the newer, pricier Honda E will take you. With all this in its favour, being one of the cheapest electric cars you can buy is the icing on the e-Up’s cake.
