New Renault Grand Scenic vs Citroen Grand C4 Picasso vs Volkswagen Touran

Renault has upped the MPV stakes with its stylish new Grand Scénic seven-seater. Is it enough to defeat our current MPV of the Year, the Touran, or the revamped Grand C4 Picasso?...

Our verdict

The Grand Scénic is certainly one of the most head-turning MPVs out there and comes with a lot of standard kit. Despite this, it finishes last in this test due to it being more expensive, not very refined and, most importantly of all, the least spacious of our trio.

In second place is the recently revised Grand C4 Picasso. It has an engine that’s nearly as strong as the Scénic’s but far quieter, is a lot more spacious inside and has most of the kit you’d need and a bit more. However, we would like to see AEB as standard, or at least a much cheaper option than it is. The second-row seats are also fiddly to fold and the ride wallows on twisty roads and crashes over potholes.

That leaves us with the Touran. It may look a little boring next to its extrovert French rivals, but its sensibleness is its key strength. From the moment you get in, it impresses with its feeling of quality, solidity and user-friendliness. It’s also roomy inside, having the most spacious third-row seats and running the C4 very close for second-row leg room.

Importantly, all of the seats are easy to fold up or down and the seats in the middle row can be moved individually. Despite its lesser performance, the Touran is comfortably the best car here to drive, too, thanks to well-weighted steering, a slick gearbox and good body control. The Touran is a little firmer-riding than the C4, but we suspect children will be less likely to feel carsick in the Touran, and we’d take the odd bump over a major clean-up operation every time.

Fancy a seven-seat SUV instead?
